Nutrition Tips with Danae!
Eating doesn’t need to be complicated. Whether you’re packing lunchboxes, preparing family meals, supporting children to try new foods, or looking for practical nutrition advice, we’re here to help.
In this section, School Food Matters Dietitian Danae Giardina shares evidence-based tips, resources and insights to support your eating at home.
Steps to Eating: Supporting Children to Explore New Foods
Children often need multiple opportunities to see, interact with and explore a food before they are ready to eat it.
When children are learning to eat and learning to eat new foods, there can be up to 32 steps in the eating journey. Some children move through these steps gradually, some move forwards and backwards, and others may skip a few steps altogether.
The “Steps to Eating” frameworks helps families, educators and school staff recognise that success can happen at any step. By responding with curiosity and encouragement, we can support children to build confidence with food over time.
At School Food Matters and through our School Lunch Program, we support students through all stages of the eating journey.

Mealtime Guidance for Schools
Schools play a key role in creating a relaxed and enjoyable mealtime environment which can help young people to learn to like new foods. This information is intended to help the staff and volunteers who will be supervising meals, feel confident and comfortable in their role. We have created infographics with more information. You might like to print and display these around your staff room or in classrooms where meals will be served.
If you have further questions, feel free to contact your School Food Matters project officer.
