Greening up the menu at Campbell Town District High School
Campbell Town District High School’s canteen is currently up for re-accreditation through our SmartFood Program, and it’s fantastic to see the hard work being put in by Canteen Manager Linda.
Linda is new to the role of Canteen Manager, so the SmartFood accreditation process isn’t something she is familiar with. Her first step has been to look at the current menu. Instead of feeling overwhelmed, Linda sees this as an opportunity to review the menu, add some ideas of her own and encourage students to try something new.
Campbell Town District High School has previously achieved BRONZE accreditation, but Linda hopes her changes will help the school move up to the next SmartFood Award level. Linda was proud to tell us that the new items she has added have quickly become student favourites, and she’s already having to increase the quantity she makes each week!
Often, achieving an accreditation level menu or moving to a higher award level only requires a few simple adjustments. This may include:
- Swapping an existing product to a more suitable brand
- Introducing a few new GREEN category items
- “GREENING UP” current menu options by adding GREEN ingredients to an existing AMBER product
- Some schools also find that reducing the number of food and drink choices on the menu can help them reach their desired SmartFood Award level.
Campbell Town District High School’s commitment to improving their menu demonstrates that creating a healthier canteen doesn’t require a complete menu overhaul. Small, practical changes can make a significant difference, helping schools meet SmartFood criteria while continuing to provide appealing options for students.
We look forward to seeing the school finalising their reaccreditation with a new SmartFood level.
