Steps to Eating: Supporting Children to Explore New Foods
Children often need multiple opportunities to see, interact with and explore a food before they are ready to eat it.
When children are learning to eat and learning to eat new foods, there can be up to 32 steps in the eating journey. Some children move through these steps gradually, some move forwards and backwards, and others may skip a few steps altogether.
The βSteps to Eatingβ frameworks helps families, educators and school staff recognise that success can happen at any step. By responding with curiosity and encouragement, we can support children to build confidence with food over time.
