School kitchen supervisors, canteen supervisors, staff and volunteers recently came together for two School Kitchen Workshops, with one held in the North West and another in the South. The workshops provided an opportunity to connect, share practical ideas and celebrate the people helping to make nutritious school food possible across Tasmania.

The workshops brought together people from different schools to learn from one another and explore topics including allergy awareness, growing volunteer teams, reducing plate waste and encouraging children to try unfamiliar foods.

Participants also tasted the Moroccan Bowl for lunch, a new recipe from the Term 3 School Lunch Program menu. Conversations highlighted the important role kitchen teams play in creating a positive food culture and giving children the confidence and opportunity to taste foods for themselves.

We also heard from Dr Kim Jose and Kylie Smith about the evaluation of Tasmania’s School Lunch Program and welcomed contributions from 24 Carrot Gardens and members of our school community.

Thank you to everyone who attended, presented and generously shared their experiences. We would also like to thank Wendy and the team at Kingston Primary School for welcoming us into their community for the Southern Workshop.

These workshops are a valuable reminder that School Food Matters programs are about much more than serving food. They are about bringing school communities together and helping children eat well, connect and thrive.
