Building the future of school food in Australia
The inaugural National School Food Summit brought together leaders from education, health, research, government, food service and community organisations to explore what is possible for school food in Australia.
Held in Hobart and hosted by School Food Matters in partnership with the Federation of Canteens in Schools, the Summit created space for both big-picture conversations and practical discussions grounded in research, lived experience and real-world delivery.
Across the day, speakers and delegates explored:
- The role of school food in improving health, wellbeing and learning
- Food security and health equity
- Universal school meal models
- Food allergy management and inclusive food systems
- Operational delivery models and implementation
- Research, evidence and evaluation
- Opportunities for national collaboration and advocacy
One of the strongest themes throughout the Summit was a sense of optimism and momentum. Delegates repeatedly reflected on how uplifting and motivating it was to be part of a national conversation focused on what could be possible for children and young people across Australia.
The Summit also highlighted the importance of continuing collaboration across sectors, with strong support for ongoing national dialogue and shared action.
